Has The Iron Throne Cursed King Viserys?

House of The Dragon has made its grand entrance worldwide. Once again, we’re introduced to the world of Game of Thrones and House Targaryen. However, Has The Iron Throne Cursed King Viserys? Think about the first episode. It may be giving us a hint at what is to come. We’ll discuss specifics in this article and the popular theory about the Iron Throne’s curse.

If you’ve read the books, you’ll know where the story is going. However, House of the Dragon is based partially on one of George R.R. Martin’s novels. Therefore, events may change from how they happened, just like in Game of Thrones. One scene stuck out to me in the first episode House of The Dragon, and it may hint towards the fate of Paddy Considine’s King Viserys I Targaryen.

    SPOILER WARNING

This article contains spoilers for House of The Dragon Episode One “The Heirs of the Dragon”. You have been warned!

The Iron Throne Cursed King Viserys!

We get plenty of screentime with the legendary Iron Throne in House of The Dragon. Not only that, we see multiple Targaryen family members sitting in it. Both Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen and, of course, King Viserys. At the time of the first episode, Viserys has ruled the Seven Kingdoms for nine years from the Iron Throne. However, his downfall might have just started.

During the intense standoff with Prince Daemon, a small detail was on-screen. After Daemon is sent away, Viserys sits back on the Iron Throne and cuts his hand. This small detail may seem like it is not important. After all, he is sitting on a throne made of swords. Much like an old wooden chair, you’re going to get a cut or two, perhaps, especially if you’re not being careful about what you’re doing.

However, this scene may hint toward more happening. King Viserys denied Daemon his right as Heir to the Iron Throne and House Targaryen. Therefore, perhaps the cut is a sign the throne has rejected his decision. Perhaps the Iron Throne itself thinks otherwise. You might think me mad. How can an inanimate object do this? However, many fans believe otherwise.

The Curse Of The Iron Throne

People in Westeros believe it was a sign of the Iron Throne cutting a king or queen. A sign that this individual it cut was not fit to rule. Therefore, Has The Iron Throne Cursed King Viserys? While not a curse directly, it could be a sign that it’s rejected him and his rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Other individuals, notably the Targaryen family, have been cut by the throne.

An example of this is Maegor the Cruel. He was a Targaryen and even killed his brother, Aenys, to claim the Seven Kingdoms and rule himself. However, he was found bloodied and dead in his throne room. Sliced by the sharp edges of the Iron Throne. But some do believe he was in fact murdered, so take that how you will.

Another victim of the Iron Throne is a Targaryen everyone is familiar with. Aerys II, otherwise known as “The Mad King”, was frequently cut by the Iron Throne. In the books, he was nicknamed “King Scab”. However, Game of Thrones as a series does not mention that or anything about the Iron Throne cutting individuals. Only House of The Dragon has dared go near this theory.

King Visery’s Future On The Iron Throne

Notice how Viserys cuts his hand while banishing Prince Daemon. It’s an emotional response due to the loss of his wife and son. Therefore the Iron Throne seems to have responded to an emotional outburst by the current ruler. He suffers the consequences of that outburst by a cut to the hand.

Viserys isn’t cruel like Maegor or The Mad King. However, he is indecisive. Prince Daemon points this out. It would seem that he isn’t suited for ruling the Seven Kingdoms, and many agree. Including the very seat in which he rules from. But who is fit to rule, and could this be our secret sign in House of the Dragon?

Various Targaryen’s seem to be eyeing up the Iron Throne in House of The Dragon. Might the throne itself be our signal for who is actually going to be the new ruler. While Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is now the heir to the Iron Throne, she has not sat on it currently. That we know of anyone. However, might this sign pop up somewhere in the future? Therefore, it could also be a sign we’ll be saying goodbye to the King sometime soon.

    Conclusion

House of The Dragon is giving us a fresh look at House Targaryen. However, with a war of succession looming, multiple characters are eyeing the Iron Throne. It’s only a matter of time till someone else makes a power play. Then we’ll see who the real villains of the storyline are. Right now, it appears Prince Daemon might be that character. However, that might not be the case.
