Jared Harris Talks Hari Seldon’s Changes In Foundation Season 3

We’re days away from Foundation Season 3 returning to our screens. The third season of Apple TV+’s grand science fiction adventure promises explosive action as it jumps 152 years forward from the second season. However, while the series changes characters each season, Jared Harris is playing the same ones in each season of the show. The character of Doctor Hari Seldon differs in that there are multiple versions. We’ve got The Vault version, which is like a hologram, and then the “real” version, which is with Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell).

Nerdgazm entered The Vault to talk with Jared Harris about Foundation Season 3 and how we find the character of Hari Seldon, both in The Vault and on Ignis with the Second Foundation.

Jared Harris on Foundation Season 3

Jack: Jared, thank you for joining us today to discuss Foundation Season 3. Let’s dive straight into Season 3 – 152 years from the second season. Does that make you approach your characters, of Doctor Hari Seldon, differently?

Jared: Yeah, you always need to honour the storytelling that you have told so far, and use that as a way of moving forward, so you don’t trash everything that you have gone through so far. That can be quite frustrating if you’ve watched it. I know I find that frustrating as an actor. So yes, your characters have to evolve and they evolve by benefit of the experiences they have gone through. That is the basis of storytelling.

Jack: Foundation is a big sci-fi adventure, what keeps drawing you to stories like this and in particular Foundation?

Jared: I think it’s the kid in me, I just love sci-fi, what can i say. I have done a couple of them. I like the nature of science fiction; I find that very satisfying. It is a comfortable way of maybe taking about what is happening in the present day but as an allegory of what could be happening or might happen in the future.

    Same Face, Different Character

Jack: Something that is unique about Foundation is that you are playing, or on occasion, other versions of your character. How do you approach that as an actor?

Jared: That is one of the things I discussed with David (S. Goyer) right at the beginning, it is one of the pitches he gave me that there would be two different versions of the character that would be different and would be going on different journeys. One of the characters, when he is reborn on The Raven something has already gone wrong. When he acquires a body in Season 2, he becomes vulnerable and human again, with everything that implies.

The other version of the character (Vault Seldon) is starting to catch up to that desire, although there is something that sounds appealing – the ability to live forever as a digital consciousness in the Vault. There is another sense in which it feels like a prison. It limits what you can do and what you can experience, he starts to long for things that make it Human for us.

The Conflict of Foundation Season 3

Jack: Conflict is on the edge of Foundation Season 3; we’re heading towards something very explosive. How is your character finding that in this season? Could you give us some insight?

Jared: Well, everything comes to a head in Season 3, The Mule (Pilou Asbæk) has arrived, and he is challenging the empire a lot earlier than Psychohistory predicted. The empire is also crumbling from inside, in terms of the dynamic and relationship between the Cleons. It’s all coming to a head at this point.

    Jack: Explosive, some could say?!

    Jared: Again, it might!

Jack: Jared, thank you for your time today.

Jared: You’ve watched all the episodes?

    Jack: All nine!

Jared: Ah! I get your point there! Thank you!
