PREVIEW – House of The Dragon Episode 4

Following the changing times in last week’s House of The Dragon, we’re in for a ride again. Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen has returned to Kings Landing. Likely we should be expecting fireworks between King Viserys and Daemon. House of The Dragon Episode 4 has a reveal for us, based on the trailer and preview pictures. However, what might this mean for the rest of the series going forward?

House of The Dragon Episode 4 is the first episode to have a female director since 2014. By this, we mean in the Game of Thrones universe. Previously the season 4 episode, “First of His Name”, was directed by Michelle MacLaren. Episode 4 of House of The Dragon is directed by Clare Kilner. Did you know the last four seasons of Game of Thrones has no female directors? Additionally, after Season 3, the show had no female screenwriters either.

    Preview Pictures

HBO has released preview pictures for House of The Dragon Episode 4. Based on the preview pictures and preview trailer, Prince Daemon Targaryen has returned to Kings Landing. Therefore the Battle of the Stepstones is fully over. I mean, we saw that in the previous episode. Additionally, the title and the pictures indicate that Daemon has been named the King of The Narrow Sea.

Details reveal a year has passed since the previous episode, “Second of His Name”. In the last episode, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) was stated as 17 years old. Therefore she would be 18 years old in this episode. As such, four years have passed since the season premiere of House of The Dragon.

House of The Dragon Episode 4 – Teaser Trailer

Once again, the Valyrian Steel Dagger makes an appearance. The fan favourite Game of Thrones weapon is widely known as the “Catspaw Dagger” due to the nature of the assassin who wielded it in Thrones. However, in House of The Dragon, it is held by King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). Judging from the trailer, it’s used to tell the tale of “Aegon’s Dragon Dream”.

It’s clear House Targaryen is not fully secure. Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) has returned to Kings Landing as a king. You can imagine this will likely cause rifts among the King’s small council and the family circle. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is still being sent out to find a husband. A task we know she is not keen for. This is where we see her visiting Storm’s End. More on that later.

Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifan) also appears to be making political moves. He’s seen in the teaser trailer delivering “discomforting” news to the King. We also see Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) confronting Rhaenyra with whatever this information is. Judging by the last episode, we can see a power play forming outside of House Targaryen.

    Storm’s End

Finally, we see Storm’s End. The seat of House Baratheon is mentioned frequently in Game of Thrones. However, due to budget restrictions, the location never appeared. It was scheduled to appear in the second season of GoT, during the parley between Renly Baratheon and Stannis Baratheon. It would have also appeared later in the series as well.

Julian Lewis Jones returns as Lord Boremund Baratheon. However, it would appear that Targaryen royalty has paid a visit to Storm’s End. The preview trailer shows the Princess being presented with a young man. Therefore this might be a case of Rhaenyra being shipped around to try and find a husband. Maybe House Baratheon are trying to strengthen ties to The Iron Throne?

    Conclusion

House of The Dragon Episode 4 premieres on HBO Max on Sunday at 9 PM ET.
