Tómas Lemarquis Talks “Magnifico” In Foundation Season 3 – Interview

Foundation Season 3 is in full swing. AppleTV+’s grand sci-fi adventure, based on the Foundation series of stories by Isaac Asimov, has really ramped up the stakes for its third season. For example, everything is in chaos. The Foundation, Empire and more are all being targeted by The Mule, a powerful Mentalic seeking conquest over both the Empire and the Foundation. Thanks to AppleTV+, we’re talking to actor Tómas Lemarquis, who portrays  Magnifico Giganticus in Foundation Season 3.

🔥 FULL REVIEW of Foundation Season 3!

    The World of Foundation

Jack: Stepping into Foundation Season 3 in the role of Magnifico must have been a big task. What has it been like for you?

Tómas: Well, it’s the first time for me to have this size of a role in such a long series I’ve been in, you know, I’ve been in TV series before, but not with an opening credit, let’s say so. For me, it was very different. Just also the duration. I mean, it took seven months, but not only seven months in one go, but there was a strike in between, so it was also, you know, stretched over a much longer period. So it became all like a very long journey to go through, and you had to stay connected with the character during these eight months as well. And so it was challenging.

Jack: We’ve heard from, like other stars in Foundation Season 3, that you’ve been to so many different fantastic locations around the world to film this show – could you tell me your favourite location?

Tómas: We were filming a lot in Prague, but I absolutely fell in love with uh, our “Sweetheart”, our spaceship. It was just so much love, and Rory Cheyne, the set designer, had made it beautifully, with things working for real. You know, you could really get a glass with the ice cube falling into it. It was just amazing.

The Character of Magnifico Giganticus In Foundation

Jack: As we’ve seen, Magnifico is a key player in The Mule’s team this season. What was it like working with Pilou Asbeck?

Tómas: He is an incredible actor. It was very inspiring to work with him and see him in action, and from day one in the preparation. He was very prepared, and it was very inspiring for everyone, I think, on set, how ready he was to dive straight into it. He’s great, Very nice.

Jack: You say that Magnifico is like a childlike character. In what sense would you say he is like a childlike character?

Tómas: I think I see him very much in his heart, in a very you know, innocent person, but that it’s been used to do sometimes horrible things, but he’s also, he’s very connected with his inner child, and it’s the wonder of beauty, of art, of music. He’s a true artist, I believe.

Jack: Your character gets a pretty cool Musical Instrument in Foundation Season 3, can you tell us more about the Visi-Sonor and what it is like working with that prop?

Tómas: Yeah, it was great. I mean, I got to work with a musician in Prague called Radim to think about a little bit about what it could mean, because it’s not really an instrument that exists like as we know it I mean, I don’t want to reveal too much, it’s a sort of a synesthesia machine where, uh, where the senses get mixed, where you can see sound or hear visuals, or everything gets mixed. It can have a very profound effect on people, as we have seen a little bit already.

Jack: I feel like we should give a shout-out to the VFX department, because not only have you got a fantastic prop to work with, but the visuals coming out of this look beautiful

The Dream Team of Foundation Season 3

Jack: You get to share some fantastic scenes with Synnøve and Cody in Season 3. What was it like joining them on their starship and adventuring around with the pair?

Tómas: It was wonderful and uh, I mean, it’s, Magnifico, you know, the odd one out. I mean, they are a couple, and they live in the spaceship, and suddenly they have this kind of third wheel in with them. You know she calls me “Maggie”, I’m a little bit like almost her little puppy somehow, but I feel safe in their hands. You know, after being tortured and in the hands of the Mule it feels like a good space to be in.

Jack: Would you say Magnifico is more like, you know, not like a sidekick, I guess, to the mule, but more like one of his subjects, not really working with him but more working for the mule.

Tómas: Yes, although I think it’s been forced upon him. But then often, like, the relationship between a victim and a perpetrator can be very complex and like the Stockholm syndrome, and you start to have maybe like your slave master a little bit too. I’ve been living with him for so long, and he makes it possible for me to shine as well, to play in front of all the people, and so it opens some doors to me. So in that sense, I’m grateful. However, in another instance, I’m also being humiliated, ridiculed, and treated poorly by the mule. But it’s kind of. You know, I see Magnifico more as an empath than him as a narcissist, and this is kind of the relationship between a narcissist and an empath, but both types of people need each other also in a way.

    Foundation Season 3’s Differences

Jack: As we’re approaching the end of our time together today, I wonder if you could tell me what your favourite moment of filming Foundation season three was? Was it working with the cast members? Was it your own time? You need fantastic sets. What’s your favourite moment, if you’ve got one?

Tómas: There was a well; I don’t know, I think it’s in the next episode. I’m not sure if it will make the cut. You never know. However, at least there is a moment when I discuss my instrument that I felt was very magical. Magical moment, because it was significant for my character as well.
