Breaking news from San Diego Comic-Con! Finally, the Doctor Who Spin-Off Series was announced during the show’s Hall H panel. Titled “The War Between The Land and The Sea“, the series will see UNIT battle with the Sea Devils. Doctor Who Showrunner Russell T Davies announced the spin-off during this Friday’s panel at the American convention.
Russell Tovey (“Feud”, “American Horror Story: NYC”) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Surface”, “Loki”) will headline the five-part series. They’ll be joined by familiar “Doctor Who” faces Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim. The pair mark the arrival of UNIT in the Doctor Who Spin-Off Series. The military organization has been a mainstay in the recent Doctor Who series, always available to assist The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa).
What We Know About The Doctor Who Spin-Off Series!
This isn’t Tovey’s first foray into the Whoniverse, as he popped up in Doctor Who as Alonso Frame over a decade ago. The actor appeared alongside 10th Doctor actor David Tennant. The episode, “Voyage of the Damned“, was a Christmas Special adventure which also guest starred Kylie Minogue. Mbatha-Raw is also no stranger to the TARDIS, appearing as Martha Jones’s (Freeman Agyeman) sister, Tish, in four episodes. Davies confirmed that they will take on new roles in the spin-off. As such, these will be new original characters. Some fans will find this disappointing news.
“I’m chuffed to bits to work with such a brilliant cast,” Davies said. “And this is a massive, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its core. When the Doctor’s not about, the whole of humanity is in hot water.” Dylan Holmes-Williams will direct the series. He was the director of two Doctor Who season one episodes, “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble“.
Filming for the Doctor Who spin-off series, produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC, kicks off next month. Alongside Davies, executive producers include Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. Writer Pete McTighe also joins the creative team. He’s previously written two Doctor Who episodes under former showrunner Chris Chibnall.
Onwards for Doctor Who!
Ncuti Gatwa’s first season of Doctor Who just finished. However, it seems all steam ahead for the franchise right now. While there is no announcement of a third season with Dinsey+, we now do have a second season plus a spin-off series in the works. Surely that is enough to keep Whovians happy for the moment? You would hope so! Regardless, I am keen to see where “The War Between The Land and The Sea” goes for Doctor Who. Will it be mature like Torchwood, or more family-friendly like The Sarah Jane Adventures? Only time will tell!
