“Destiny Rising” New Mobile Game Announced!

Destiny Rising‘ is an upcoming mobile shooter game just announced by NetEase. Set to be the next entry into the Destiny franchise, it will be a free-to-play FPS action mobile game with no current release date. The game is also set to feature online multiplayer with “clans, part game modes, customised social spaces and more.”

NetEase has stated that the game will be set in an alternate universe to the mainline Destiny franchise. Reportedly, all development efforts were completed by NetEase which would mean that the development of this game would have no impact on the potential of Destiny 3. When the news about Destiny Rising leaked earlier this year this was a major concern for the player base, especially alongside the heavy layoffs that Bungie faced.

Players can pre-register for the closed alpha, which is planned to launch in November of this year. This registration is available here.

    New Characters

Destiny Rising‘ appears to have prebuilt characters and will be venturing away from the player customisation seen in the main franchise. Developers said that these characters will be fully fleshed. The game will be set in a time before Guardians and instead will feature ‘Light Bearers’. Developers showed off a handful of these characters, including what looks to be a new take on ‘The Speaker’ from Destiny 1. NetEase has said that players will be able to customise the gender and appearance of their player, who is titled ‘Wolf’.

Each of these characters is set to have unique abilities and weaponry. We’ve seen some of these new abilities in the trailers including a new void Scythe style super. These new abilities and weapons look to be the best part of the upcoming game and fans are very excited about them. As this is set before Guardians it appears NetEase won’t be limiting their exploration of Light abilities to things we’ve already seen.

This could be a very good opportunity to see stories from the Dark Ages come to life in the game the majority of which have previously only been seen in lore entries. Dark Age stories tend to be some of the strongest the Destiny franchise has to offer so this could be promising for the game. While NetEase talked a lot about how the world would be fleshed out and full of mystery, they did not give many specific details. It appears no major character names or locations have been revealed. Despite this, it appears players will be primarily fighting in the Cosmodrome once again.

    Post-Dark Age Story

This new storyline will be set in the post-dark age, but players will know from Destiny 1 and 2 before the tower age. Developers wanted to “capture and depict a specific time, where the reins are in the hands of the players to experience, to explore, to define.” Diving into this post-Dark-age setting players should expect to witness epic legends in the making with a deep and fantastic world for players to explore fully.

From the developer’s descriptions, it sounds like this game world will have in-depth storylines woven into its architecture, which fans know and love from the core game franchise. Whilst it is set in an alternate universe this could be a good way to explore other storylines and ideas that players have enjoyed in Destiny’s long history.

From the footage that was shown off in the recent trailer, it appears that there will be environments themed around the Cosmodrome, the IX’s realm, Vex Structures and Hive caves. Developers also led on that social spaces will be more city-like in structure than Destiny 2’s tower with the inclusion of Taverns and Alleys.

    Community Backlash

When the news about a potential Destiny mobile game leaked earlier this year the player-base had a very negative reception to the idea. Many were concerned about Bungie dividing their assets to ‘lack lustre’ game projects. Alongside the layoffs of around 220 employees earlier in the year after the success of ‘The Final Shape’, fans were left very confused and angry by the leaks.

However, the immediate reception to the game’s announcements seems to be primarily positive. NetEase has also reassured through disclaimers that they are the core development team behind the project. It appears the company has been licensed full creative freedom from Bungie and has had little supervision.

Whilst the trailers and promotional art do look interesting, there’s not been a major reveal on actual gameplay. In the development video, they showcased some third-person exploration of the social environment which looks interesting. However, there’s not been a major amount of footage of the core FPS gameplay cycle. NetEase has stated that it will be a ‘top-tier’ shooting action so we will have to wait and see.

    Conclusion

Destiny Rising‘ appears to be a well-fleshed-out FPS mobile game coming from NetEase. The game is set to feature brand-new characters with unique and never-before-seen abilities. It appears to be a creative new take on the Destiny universe set in an alternate timeline from the main franchise.

The new game will take players back before the Tower in Destiny 1 just after the dark age. NetEase promises to serve up an action-packed, top-tier mobile shooter game. Footage that the developers have shown off looks very promising and fans are excited to see more from ‘Destiny Rising’
