Finally, a new Stargate series is coming soon. Amazon MGM Studios announced today that a brand new TV series is going into development, with some of the original Stargate creatives back behind the helm. The new instalment in the classic sci-fi franchise comes from Stargate Veteran, Martin Gero. Stargate was among the first MGM titles identified for series or film adaptations following Amazon’s $8.5B acquisition of the storied Hollywood studio in 2022.
An important detail about the new series is that this is NOT a reboot of Stargate. Instead, the creative team decided it is a new chapter in the franchise’s story. Martin Gero will serve as the Showrunner of the new Stargate series. In addition, he serves as creator, writer, and executive producer. However, he is not going into this new frontier alone. Executive producers also include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the duo behind the 1994 Stargate movie. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the Stargate TV universe, will serve as consulting producers.

Everything We Know about the New Stargate Series
Realistically, we don’t know much at the moment. Speaking on the Amazon Prime Video announcement video, Showrunner Martin Gero confirmed that the new series will not be a “reboot” of the franchise. Instead, it’s a brand new chapter in the Stargate franchise. Of course, Gero stresses that the new show will also need to serve as an introduction to the Stargate franchise for newcomers. Therefore, they are approaching the series so that it is accessible to new fans and to those who have been along for the journey since the start.
Additionally, the creative team emphasise that working with Prime Video means the new series will be accessible to a global audience. For example, when previous Stargate series like SG-1 were airing, different countries would get them at other times. Wth the press release, Gero said the following:
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA, I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
Launched initially with Emmerich’s 1994 feature film Stargate, the franchise has expanded over three decades to include multiple television series, including Stargate SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009), and Stargate Universe (2009-2011). Other series include the animated Stargate Infinity (2002-2003) and web series Stargate Origins (2018).
It’s not known yet when we will see the new Stargate series. At the moment, the show is in its very early stages of development. Gero has a script for a pilot episode, so we’ll likely start hearing news about the series’s pre-production as we go into 2026.
