Terrence Mann & Cassian Bilton Talk Foundation Season 3

With less than one day until Foundation Season 3 airs on AppleTV+, we’re continuing our interviews with the main cast. Nerdgazm was fortunate to enter The Vault and talk to some of the series leads about the impressive changes we found in the third season. For example, given that we are 152 years into the future, from the second season, our known characters have undergone significant changes. We spoke to Terrence Mann & Cassian Bilton about the characters of Brother Dusk and Brother Dawn.

Foundation Season 3 – Jump To The Future

Jack: This season, it’s a big one!

    Cassian: It’s a big one!

Jack: Foundation Season 3, and the series, it works well to highlight the relationship between Brother Dusk and Brother Dawn – how does that evolve and change as we find ourselves 152 since the second season?

Cassian: It’s resting with the early themes of the show, but I think this season primarily focuses on power and within the wrestles for power, war and the destruction that comes as a result. Ultimately, in the earlier seasons, you’ve got multiple different factions trying to determine who is in control. They’re desperate, but this season unites them all against a common enemy, which is The Mule. From Episode One to Episode 10, it is kind of a bloody thrill ride of just endless destruction while people desperately cling to power.

Terrence: Because we’re all the Cleons are tainted, the whole bloodline is tainted, so everybody is scrambling to survive, and everybody has their reasons for doing what they are doing. At the end of the day, you, Dusk, are trying to hang on to the tradition of power and hold the Empire together. That makes him have to make some very difficult choices. Big, BAD choices! So, you know, I think there is the rise and fall of civilisation as we know it. That happens all the time. That is what history teaches us. That is what is happening this season.

Terrence: When we first read the script, I remember reading it – it was just a real page-turner. Because everything is changing.

Jack: I found myself watching the episodes like that!

    Terrence & Cassian: Yes!

    The Evolution of Brother Dawn

Jack: The previous seasons have shown us different clones of Brother Dawn, how is the Season 3 one different?

Cassian: I think he is different! It’s amusing to watch Foundation Season 3 now, having just rewatched episodes of Seasons One and Two. Season One Dawn is so fragile, so unsure of himself. Ultimately, he is insecure. Season 3 Dawn could not be more different. Season 3 Dawn is very single-minded and very clear in what he wants to achieve. He is both a strong politician and has this natural Cleon charm that Lee Pace excels at bringing out in Brother Day. So I think he is ready for that middle throne in a way you have not seen him before.

Cassian: What is so fun about the Cleosn is that you see them at different stages. What is really cool is seeing the transition from Dawn to Day, from Day to Dusk, and from Dusk to Darkness. My favourite parts of the show as a whole, like in Season One, are when we first see Dusk turn into Brother Darkness. You see that shift. I think what you are seeing in Season 3 is that shift from Brother Dawn to Brother Day and really taking on that power.

Jack: It’s great to have that now comparison. We’ve seen Darkness, now we’re seeing this evolution. He definitely feels more confident!

    Dusk to Darkness

Jack: Terrence, the same sort of question to you. Our Season 3 Brother Dusk is different from Dusks we have seen before in Seasons One and Two.

Terrence: He is King Lear. He is literally King Lear, because the family is coming apart, they want to steal everything, they want to kill their father and take the land – the solar system in this case – they want to control space and control everything.

Jack: Foundation, a Sci-Fi series, has got some grand sets, grand designs, and the outfits are fantastic. What are the highlights of being in this series for you? The sets? The actors?

Cassian: Honestly, I think it’s all of the above. We are so lucky on this show to shoot in these remarkable, practical sets. Honestly, you should come and see them, they are so like grand and yet so detailed.

Terrence: You get the scope of it!

Cassian: It’s hard as an actor to act opposite a green screen. You have an understanding of how the world is meant to be designed. It’s very different walking on set in these beautiful costumes and grand sets. There is, however, an element of it that is great. Then there’s just the opportunity to spend time with each other. We are fortunate.

Terrence: We are! We’ve been able to be carried around the world to other locations. Just watching these real places and events happening – all of that then informs you as to the largeness of what the show is. However, it also makes you feel much more personal when you are just talking one-on-one with another actor, as you have all this information stored.

Cassian: I think it is a testament to the spirit of the show that all of us go to set when we are not filming. I think that speaks to the fact that we care so much about this show. Whether it’s to visit a particular set or location, or to chat with each other. Like “Terry I am shooting in this incredible place, you have to come”, or come meet this actor – there is this camaraderie that even though we are trying to pull off this immense thing, it does not feel like that on set. We’ve just got each other.
