    Press Screener Reactions

With the show only less than a week away, press have started to get screeners. No official reviews are out so far, with the embargo expected to drop later this week. We’ll keep an eye on these reviews, but so far, the initial reactions are very positive!

    Writer for ComicBook.Com

EVComedy for ComicBook.Com says that it does the source material justice, and then some! This is great to hear, considering Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece, has been involved with the Project. He also mentions the infamous Cowboy Bebop Live Action Adaption that Netflix did recently. He confirms that it is not like that adaption, which is good to hear.

Kevin Fenix of Illuminerdi hopes that everyone likes the adaption as much as he does. He even says that it is a better way to get into One Piece than watching the anime. This is high praise indeed! The original voice actors from the One Piece Anime will be reprising their characters in the Japanese Dub. It’ll be interesting to watch that, after of course watching it in English with the on-screen actors.

The One Piece Netflix twitter account even posted the latest trailer with the Japanese voices. Hearing Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy, is just amazing. It is also interesting that the voice actors have altered their voices to fit the on-screen performances of the live action cast. All the original Straw Hat voices are back. However we also have reprising their roles; Shigeru Chiba as Buggy, Masane Tsukayama as Gold Roger and many others!

Rama Tampubolon goes on to say it was pretty awesome and faithful to the anime. He also mentions the badass Zoro that is played by Mackenyu. Zoro is known for his unique “Three-Sword Style” sword techniques so it will be great to see how this is translated into live action!

Rafael Motamayor a writer for SlashFilm, also gives a positive review. Saying it is faithful where it matters, while still being good to newcomers to the series. Also praising the cast, calling them perfect. Rafael Motamayor was one reviewer who disliked the ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Live Action adaption. So to hear him speaking highly of ‘One Piece’ is nice to hear.

Not only does it seem to be resonating with prior One Piece fans, but newcomers to the franchise as well. The Streamr’s Mo. After watching the Live Action, he has moved on to reading the manga, which is a good sign! The Live Action should complement the manga, and if it brings more fans into this great series, its a success!

    Fan Reactions

Fans lucky enough to attend the fan screening at Los Angeles have given glowing reactions to the first episode! The first episode is titled: “Romance Dawn”. Fans of One Piece will know the significance of this name. It isn’t just the name of the first chapter of One Piece. Romance Dawn was also the name of One Piece in earlier versions. What were some of the reactions to this episode anyway?

Leon Brill, a fan lucky enough to attend the fan screenings, has glowing praise indeed! They say it is truly the best version they could have imagined. This is great to hear from such a long time One Piece fan!

@Cadysu gives the first episode a solid 9/10 which is high indeed! Their highlights being the comedy, the costumes and the freaky CGI! Luffy is someone who has the properties of Rubber, so it should look freaky and unnatural to see him stretch his limbs.

@OmegaBaki also gives the episode a 9/10 saying it was “absolutely Fantastic”. They even shared some pictures of the drone show the fan events had after the screening ending.

The biggest criticism seen in many of these reactions, with @hsykdj’s included, is the pacing of the show. It seems to be very fast paced. With 8 episodes covering approximately 95 chapters of Manga, this makes sense. Though through trailers we have seen the story being adapted to fit this pace. Though this is a criticism, they still have a positive reaction, and describe the pacing as not much of an issue. They have high praise for Iñaki Godoy‘s Luffy, Emily Rudd‘s Nami and the Mackenyu fight scenes as Zoro.
