    Millie Gibson Joins Doctor Who

It’s an exciting time to be a Doctor Who fan. Imagine our surprise as Millie Gibson Joins Doctor Who. As we waved goodbye to Jodie Whittaker in “The Power of The Doctor”, we welcomed the next era. Ncuti Gatwa is set to be the Fifteenth Doctor. However, before he takes over entirely, we’ve got David Tennant back for the 60th Anniversary. But that’s not stopping the BBC and Russell T Davies from announcing the new companion.

The announcement came during BBC Children In Need on Friday, the 18th of November. Millie Gibson is the latest actor to join the cast of Doctor Who. The fourteenth series is set to start filming in December 2022. Therefore it makes sense the companion announcement happens now. Earlier on Friday, the official social media accounts posted a cryptic clue. It featured a ruby emoji, which now makes sense. But who is Millie Gibson, and what do we know about them?

Welcome, Millie Gibson, To Doctor Who!

Gibson will be playing the character of Ruby Sunday. She’s the latest companion to join the Doctor on his time-travelling adventures. Therefore she’ll be starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa and making her debut in 2023’s festive season. She’s best known for her role as Kellie Neelan in ITV’s Coronation Street. Additionally, she’s just received the “Best Young Performer Award”, at the British Soap Awards earlier in 2022. Speaking about joining Doctor Who, Millie had this to say:

“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

Ncuti Gatwa, the fifteenth Doctor, also had this to say:

“Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”

Yasmin Finney was thought to be the next Doctor Who companion. The actress is a part of the 60th Anniversary specials, working alongside Catherine Tate. Finney has her breakout role earlier in 2022, starring in Netflix’s Heartstopper alongside Joe Locke and Kit Conner. However, with today’s news that Millie Gibson Joins Doctor Who, Finney’s time by the Doctor’s side might be short. Her character is called “Rose” and is the apparent daughter of Tate’s Donna Noble character.

The New Era For Doctor Who

Doctor Who is entering a new era. However, not just with a new Doctor and adventure in space and time. The return of former showrunner Russell T Davies has also brought some big changes. Behind the scenes, we see Disney+ partnering with the BBC to distribute the series internationally. Therefore one of the biggest streaming platforms will carry the series from 2023 onwards.

The BBC will still broadcast Doctor Who in the UK and Ireland. At the same time, International markets can watch the program via Disney+, the streaming service. The service is accessible in more than 150 markets around the world. The new episodes will premiere on the BBC and Disney+ in late 2023 for fans worldwide. Currently, we look forward to the return of Tennant and Catherine Tate for the three special episodes of Doctor Who.

Both partners have aligned under returning showrunner Russell T Davies’ bold vision, who takes control of the TARDIS in 2023. He was responsible for Doctor Who’s revival in 2005 and is credited with propelling the show into one of TV’s biggest hits. Davies had the following to say:

“I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

    The Adventure Awaits

It won’t be long before Doctor Who returns to our screens. At the same time, it is a long wait, with the 60th Anniversary airing in just around one year. We know we’ll be seeing and hearing more. There are already rumours about location filming for the next series in December. Whovians will have plenty to talk about during the holiday, if that’s the case. David Tennant may be returning, but Ncuti is the future.
