It’s been about 3 weeks since the announcement of a brand new Stargate series from Amazon MGM Studios. Fans are going crazy online, chatting about the new series. There are fan theories, discussions about returning characters, and more across all elements of the Stargate fandom. However, official details on what to expect have been limited. The series is set to begin pre-production with a writers’ room in January 2026. Thankfully, we have more details on what to expect.
The new series showrunner, Martin Gero, a veteran of the Stargate franchise writing team, recently sat down for an interview. To end the year, Gero sat down with the Stargate fan podcast “Dial the Gate“. In this podcast, Gero discusses the initial reaction to the new series, what to expect, and more. The podcast covers various topics, with Gero discussing how the new Amazon Stargate series must earn every view from both old and new fans.
The Origin of Amazon’s New Stargate Series
On the podcast, Martin Gero reveals that his first meeting about a new Stargate series was in 2016. This was with MGM; it led to initial discussions but did not progress. Fans will know that Stargate series creator Brad Wright had been developing a new series for some time, but for various reasons, it never got off the ground. Gero also reveals that when he moved his overall deal to Universal, there were discussions with Peacock about doing a Stargate-related project. Gero also read Wright’s new Stargate script and discussed what the project would ultimately entail.
Due to various behind-the-scenes changes, there was concern that the initial project would not get off the ground. This was around 2021. However, Amazon’s acquisition of MGM Studios ultimately derailed the project. Thankfully, when Martin Gero’s deal at Universal ended, Amazon reached out to him to pursue a new Stargate project, given his history with the franchise. Amazon’s Matt King, head of Universe Development, and Nick Pepper, IP & Talent Management, had lunch with Gero to discuss a potential new working relationship.
Amazon has already identified Stargate as a prime candidate for a new TV series. Gero stated that the initial silence was not due to a lack of enthusiasm, but rather a need to take time to get things right. Initial conversations occurred in 2023, and Gero began initial work in June 2024. After this, he would reach out to Stargate creator Brad Wright and former Executive Producer Joe Mallozzi about also working on the new series.

Creating a New Stargate Series
Martin Gero reveals that he wrote an initial draft of the new series. With that, he gave it to Wright and Mallozzi, the Safehouse Pictures producers (Joby Harold and Toy Tunnell), and, finally, to the Amazon team. That is when enthusiasm for the new series took off among internal staff. Stargate Fansite “Gateworld” editor, Darren Sumner, asked Gero how different the previous ideas are from what will be coming soon. Gero reveals that his initial 2017 idea was very different from what is taking place now. However, the 2021 Stargate draft, created by Brad Wright, is somewhat similar, but the project has undergone numerous pitches and revisions.
During the interview, Gero explains how working at Amazon differs. Whereas previously he worked on multiple projects for other companies, he has now been working on the Stargate series project for around 18 months. According to Gero, Amazon recognises the importance of the Stargate franchise and the significance of the new show.

Regarding the timeline for creating the new series, it may take some time. Gero Reitersa, the news that the writers’ room will convene in January 2026 to break ground on Amazon’s new Stargate series. However, this could take around 2 years. Potentially shorter, but hopefully not longer. Therefore, it might be some time before we see the new series. Gero stated that they chose to announce the latest series to prevent leaks. This is because multiple crew members will need to be hired to create the new series.
We’re only going to get one chance at this. I’ve said at the beginning, I am not thinking about the 11 shows i want to do. it’s really just about, i need to make a great season of television. and if that season of television is a success, then we can figure out what the rest looks like. this is a show that has proven it can support multiple shows. right now the focus is on creating a great season of television. hopefully the success of that dictates the roadmap in the future.
Additionally, given that this is an Amazon series, time is required to localise new content for additional regions. This new Stargate series will be going out to multiple countries in various languages. As such, while the new series can be completed, Amazon and its teams will still need time to translate and localise the episodes.
VFX Work on Stargate!
As a Sci-Fi show, Stargate is no stranger to large and complex Visual Effects. Even on the previous shows, we ended up with significant space battles, planets blowing up, people ascending into another plane of existence and weird space bugs. So, with this new series, it seems a focus on VFX and getting it right is key. Gero revealed that the new Stargate team is in discussions with some of the world’s largest VFX houses. It’s also a gift that the crew are not having to turn around a shot in 3 weeks, but having almost a year to create some fantastic shots.

Previous episodes of Stargate: Atlantis, written by Martin Gero, have featured extensive use of VFX shots. An example is one of Gero’s favourite episodes, “McKay and Mrs. Miller“, which used more VFX shots than was initially anticipated.
Multiple Seasons of Stargate
Amazon MGM Studios has commissioned a new Stargate series for one season. While not a “Limited Series” as some streamers have recently done, Amazon naturally wants to see how this performs. Dial The Gate asked Martin Gero about the long time between modern television seasons. For example, series like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ have seen 2-year gaps between some seasons. Will Stargate suffer the same fate? Is there a chance we will get another season a year later if the first is successful?
Gero explained that everybody wants the time between seasons down. However, while it is not a limited series, he is focused on “making 10 episodes that eveyone is going to want a second season for”. What is interesting is Gero letting slip that the Amazon’s STARGATE Series will likely consist of 10 episodes for the first season. This is not a massive surprise. Modern streaming shows, such as Star Trek, have run regular 10-episode seasons.
Gero was pressed on the “10 Episodes” comment. However, when asked again whether this was a fixed, confirmed number of episodes, he said there would be more discussion on that at a later date. Perhaps suggesting the number of episodes could change. One of the most frequent comments from the Stargate fandom is the desire for more than 10 episodes per season. Whether the fandom will get this wish is currently unknown.

Original Stargate Creators Involvement
One of the most surprising elements of the new announcement was that the original Stargate creators would be involved. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich created the first Stargate movie (1994), which kick-started the franchise we know today. Of course, much of the movie’s plot and details were changed when Stargate SG-1 (1997) premiered. The pair have gone on record before about wanting to do their own Stargate reboot that would essentially change many of the TV show’s established elements. Therefore, the involvement in Amazon’s Stargate series was a surprise.
Martin Gero has stated the pair won’t be in the writers’ room for the new series. However, they are involved in the new series. Gero also revealed that he is due to meet with Dean in the coming weeks. We don’t have full details on the original duo’s involvement at the moment, but hopefully we’ll learn more from them in the coming year.

Chevron Locked!
It seems 2026 will see the Stargate series charge ahead. While we don’t have many details to share right now, beyond what Martin Gero mentioned above, we do know regular updates are planned. Gero has said the production team plans to publish quarterly updates to stay in contact with the fandom. Consulting Producer Joe Malozzi has also said he wants to keep the fandom up to date. Therefore, fans can expect new details to creep online in the coming year. Exciting!
In Amazon’s original press release, they did share that production details and casting will be announced at a later date. Perhaps we’ll see casting announcements towards the late stages of 2026. For now, we can remain excited that the Stargate Franchise will be dialling the gate to our screens in the near future!
