Almost one year ago, the Star Trek community was shaken. The legendary Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 30th 2022. Star Trek fans remember her for the role of Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series. However, this week the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Honours Nichelle Nichols. A tribute message for the late actress was placed at the end of Season Two Episode One, “The Broken Circle”. It’s especially fitting, as actress Celia Rose Gooding portrays the younger version of Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek prequel series.
The tribute message reads as… “For Nichelle, who was first through the door and showed us the stars. Hailing frequencies forever open”. The “hailing frequencies” reference the character of Uhura’s role on the U.S.S Enterprise. Uhura served as communications officer on the bridge alongside Mr Spock (Ethan Peck/Leonard Nimoy). However, Nichelle Nichols would also take the character to the big screen. Starring in six Star Trek feature films like The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan. Strange New Worlds Honours Nichelle Nichols by expanding the character of Uhura.
Star Trek Remembers Nichelle Nichols
While Strange New Worlds Honours Nichelle Nichols, it’s not the first time it has done so recently. The recently concluded Star Trek: Picard series included nods to her character. It even established that Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) served on Uhura’s USS Leondegrance starship. Uhura would command the starship for well over two decades. For example, the ship eventually became a training vessel. Countless Starfleet Academy cadets experience faster-than-light travel for the first time aboard the Leondegrance.
Star Trek: Picard would again honour Uhura by naming a ship after her. The U.S.S Uhura, a Reliant-class, was active during the 25th Century and worked alongside the U.S.S Stargazer in Star Trek: Picard Season 2’s opening episode.
However, it seems the recently arrived second season of Strange New Worlds will continue to honour Nichelle Nichols by expanding the character of Uhura. Star Trek has established that Uhura’s family tragically died in a shuttlecraft accident. Therefore, it looks like Strange New Worlds Season 2 will explore this. For example, the trailer for Paramount+’s show reveals Uhura at a crash site of a shuttlecraft. Therefore, many think the character will be forced to relive this tragic experience.
The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on Thursday, June 15, exclusively on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds streams via Paramount+ in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Latin America, France, Germany, Brazil, South Korea (via Tving), France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland & Austria. As well as CTV Scifi / Crave in Canada, & TVNZ in New Zealand. And from June 16 on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and Central and Eastern Europe.
