In a recent panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Gavin Verhey, the Principal Magic Designer at Wizards of the Coast, unveiled the exciting details of the Magic: The Gathering’s New Doctor Who Set. This Universes Beyond expansion will bring the beloved characters, themes, and storylines of Doctor Who into the world of Magic: The Gathering.

    Universes Beyond is a product line within Magic: The Gathering that features third-party IPs on Magic cards. Following the success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set, which introduced the world of Middle-earth to Magic, Doctor Who is the following IP to make its mark in the game. This collaboration promises to be a thrilling fusion of the time-travelling adventures of the Doctor and the strategic gameplay of Magic: The Gathering.

    The Features of Magic: The Gathering’s New Doctor Who Set

    Magic: The Gathering’s New Doctor Who Set will consist of four ready-to-play Commander decks, Collector Boosters, and a Secret Lair drop. The Commander decks are designed for multiplayer games. Additionally, they offer a unique experience for players to embody the Doctor and their companions. Therefore, each Commander deck features 100 cards, including 50 new cards with Doctor Who-themed art and mechanics.

    One of the Commander decks in the Doctor Who set is “Blast from the Past.” This Blue/White/Green deck takes players on a journey through time. For example, joining the first eight Doctors and their companions in thrilling multiplayer games. The deck showcases the iconic time machine/spaceship, the TARDIS, as a Vehicle card that grants exciting abilities to the player. Additionally, the deck introduces the TARDIS Bay as a new Plane for the Planechase format, allowing players to explore different dimensions of the Doctor Who universe.

    The “Timey-Whimey” Commander deck is a White/Red/Blue deck featuring the Tenth Doctor, the Ninth and Eleventh Doctors, and their companions. As the name suggests, this deck delves into the timey-wimey nature of Doctor Who, incorporating various time-related mechanics such as suspending, vanishing, and more. The deck also introduces the Doctor’s Companion mechanic, allowing players to partner the Doctor of their choice with their companion in the Command Zone. Notable cards in this deck include “The Parting of the Ways,” a Saga that depicts the season finale of the Ninth Doctor’s first season.

    Booster Decks & More!

    In addition to the Commander decks, Magic: The Gathering’s New Doctor Who Set will feature Collector Boosters with a unique TARDIS frame. These boosters will contain 30 cards. All featuring the unique TARDIS frame design. The TARDIS frame highlights the iconic time-travelling nature of Doctor Who and adds an extra layer of collectability to the set.

    The “Paradox Power” Commander deck is a Red/Blue/Green deck that features the Twelfth and Thirteenth Doctors and their companions. Embracing the power of paradox, this deck introduces the new Paradox mechanic, which triggers when players cast spells from anywhere other than their hand. It offers a range of possibilities and surprises, with many ways to cast spells from unconventional places. The deck also includes the Fixed Point in Time Phenomenon card for Planechase enthusiasts.

    The “Masters of Evil” Commander deck is a Red/Black/Blue deck that showcases the villains of the Doctor Who universe. Players can embody the Doctor’s greatest foes, including Davros and the Daleks. The deck introduces the Villainous Choice mechanic. Therefore, allowing players to choose between two effects that will be detrimental to their opponents. Notably, the deck features the powerful removal spell, “Exterminate!” which allows players to tap Dalek tokens to copy the spell. The deck includes The Doctor’s Tomb as a new Plane for Planechase gameplay.

Ncuti Gatwa’s first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will air over the festive period, while his series 14 will debut in 2024 with Millie Gibson. Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside of the UK and Ireland.
