The Future of Star Wars Movies Revealed!

Star Wars Celebration 2023 has given us a long-overdue update on the state of Star Wars movies. During the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase Panel, Kathleen Kennedy announced the Future of Star Wars Movies with three new Star Wars films! Star Wars: The Clone Wars creator, Dave Filoni, is getting his own original movie. So let’s break down all these announcements regarding the return to a galaxy far, far away on the big screen!

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy presented a Star Wars timeline mapping out the major eras of the saga. The Old Republic, The High Republic, Fall of the Jedi, Reign of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, The New Republic and the Rise of the First Order. The future Star Wars projects will span all of these eras and two brand new eras: Dawn of the Jedi and New Jedi Order. Dawn of the Jedi takes place before the Old Republic, and New Jedi Order follows the Rise of the First Order. Disney and Lucasfilm are giving love to all eras of the Star Wars universe.

    Dave Filoni’s Mandalorian Movie

While not strictly a film about The Mandalorian, it will close out the stories around that series. The film concerns the escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic. We already see how this film will take shape via The Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka series. For example, introducing Grand Admiral Thrawn as a big villain will up the stakes of all the shows. Therefore, expect Dave Filoni’s movie to bring together the stories of The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and The Mandalorian. It’s possible Skeleton Crew could also be involved.

Filoni is no stranger to directing live-action Star Wars as of late. He started in The Mandalorian and then led his show, Ahsoka. As such, Dave is the perfect person to oversee this upcoming film. It’s also highly likely that Jon Favreau will have significant involvement due to his close working relationship with Filoni. Additionally, both men steer The Mandalorian and its connected stories in the direction that it is going.

    Dawn of The Jedi

Star Wars is no stranger to the past. We’ve seen stories told through The Old Republic and, most recently, The High Republic. However, Lucasfilm is now charting a deeper course back in time. Director James Mangold will oversee a new movie set in the deep past of the Star Wars universe. Mangold’s film will be set in the time now known as “The Dawn of the Jedi”. According to Kathleen Kennedy, it will “tell the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harness it as a liberating power in ann era of chaos and oppression”. Sounds exciting!

Star Wars has recently dropped easter eggs about the universe’s past. For example, “The Rakatan Invaders” were mentioned in Andor’s fourth episode. This species previously ruled over the Star Wars galaxy with an iron fist. Therefore, perhaps Lucasfilm has been laying the groundwork for upcoming movies more so than we thought. We know the Star Wars Universe is forever interconnected between series, books and movies. The Future of Star Wars Movies may take this into account.

    The New Jedi Order

I would laugh if you told me Daisy Ridley would be back as Rey Skywalker, in a nice way. Given how well the Sequel Trilogy landed, it is the last thing I think anyone expected Lucasfilm to announce. Still, one of the next movies and likely the first to land, is about establishing the New Jedi Order following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film is expected to take place 15 years after Episode 9 and will follow Jedi Master Rey, who is rebuilding the Jedi Order and combating the powers that rise to tear it down.

Lucasfilm has announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct it. Additionally, Steven Knight has replaced Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson as writers on the upcoming film. This film has been known for some time in an unofficial capacity. However, it seems to have changed hands a fair few times. Given the conclusion of The Rise of Skywalker, it is possible that other Sequel Trilogy characters could return. While no official date was announced, it is possible for this film to arrive in 2025.

Star Wars Movies Are Hard, Okay?

It’s been a long road for Star Wars movies as of late. It’s not wrong to say that the sequel trilogy left a sour taste in some fans’ mouths. Lucasfilm and Disney have seen more success in the Star Wars series rather than big hits on the big screen. Previously announced Star Wars movie projects seem to have been left in the dust for now or canned completely. Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins movies have reportedly been shelved completely. However, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Taika Waititi’s film is still developing.

For now, the Future of Star Wars Movies seems to be in good shape. I’m super excited to learn more about Dave Filoni’s movie. If Grand Admiral Thrawn is going to be this “Thanos style” villain, that will be super exciting for fans of the Heir to the Empire novels. At Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm confirmed a batch of new TV shows, including a second series of Andor and Mandalorian spin-off Ahsoka.
